Sexual abuse that happens in school, church, juvenile detention centers, and treatment facilities is very concerning to say the least.  These are the very institutions we trust for the development of our children and the safe space for adults. That is why institutional sexual abuse is very jarring. But we can hold them accountable.

We at Bautista LeRoy LLC have represented many survivors who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of trusted institutions, including schools, nursing homes, school buses and overnight camps. We have been standing with the survivors to fight for justice for over ten years. Many of these are minor and adults who were victimized at their most vulnerable state, and our goal is to make your voices heard and hold the institutions accountable for the wrongs they have done. We are here to help you seek justice and recover the compensation you deserve.

Institutional Abuse: A Hidden and Deep-Rooted Problem

Sexual abuse in institutions is often hidden because of intimidation, bureaucracy, and silence promotes by the leaders of the organization. Oftentimes, the victims are either children, teenagers or persons with disabilities. And these victims are very vulnerable because they do not have the power to resist abuse or speak out after being abused. When an institution itself fails to report or even cover up this kind of abuse to avoid legal or public backlash, this creates a potential legal claim for the victims.

Facilities Where Abuse Commonly Occurs

Sexual abuse happens in certain facilities, which include:

  • Reformatory or juvenile detention schools
  • State-run youth programs
  • Religious boarding schools
  • Foster homes and group homes
  • Residential treatment centers
  • Faith-based rehabilitation programs
  • Mental health and special needs facilities
  • Churches and religious institutions

These institutions are trusted to give care and support. However, these same places are prone to exploitation, coercion, and abuse of the people under their care.

Recent Litigation: Abuse at Residential Treatment Facility

The Lord's Ranch Case

The Lord's Ranch is a faith-based residential treatment center in Warm Springs, Arkansas, which closed down in 2016. It aimed to provide supposed rehabilitation and behavioral treatment for minors with emotional and psychological issues which was owned and operated by Ted Suhl. in 2023, eight former boy residents filed a lawsuit under the Justice for Vulnerable Victims of Sexual Abuse Act. They alleged that they were habitually raped and sexually molested while they are staying in the said institution. Some minor boys have reported the incident to the camp leadership, but it fell on deaf ears. In February 2025, the Arkansas Court of Appeals ruled on the statute of limitations provided in the Justice for Vulnerable Victims of Sexual Abuse Act passed in 2021. It ruled that the state legislature cannot retroactively revive expired legal claims, especially since the incident in Lord's Ranch happened decades ago. The original law allowed victims to file a civil lawsuit against the alleged abusers until they turned 55. A 2023 amendment, has removed the age limit and extends the filing period until January 31, 2026. If you were a victim of sexual abuse in Arkansas, please reach out to us to see if your claim is still viable.

Legal Remedies for Survivors of Institutional Abuse

At Bautista LeRoy LLC, we make the institutions that tolerate and hide the sexual abuse liable. We help victims recover compensation for the trauma and injury incurred. While no amount of compensation can undo the trauma, it is a powerful step toward justice and systemic change. The goal is to ensure that no further abuse will happen and no other person will suffer the same nightmare.

We investigate and fight to get the maximum compensation for:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress and psychological injuries (e.g., PTSD, anxiety, depression)
  • Medical and therapeutic expenses (past and future)
  • Loss of quality of life
  • Punitive damages (in cases of willful misconduct or cover-up)

How Long Do Survivors Have to File an Institutional Sexual Abuse Claim?

It is not easy to file a case for institutional sexual abuse. Survivors have to retell their story and relive the moments of abuse. Because of this, the law gives more time for victims to file a lawsuit even if the abuse happened a long time ago.

In Arkansas, adult survivors can file their claim within 3 years from the time the sexual abuse happened or from the date the survivor became aware of the abuse, whichever is later of the last date of abuse, when it involves a pattern of abuse.

For sexually abused children, they can file their claim anytime prior to turning 21. This means that there is no deadline when it comes to child victims or those abused when they were minors. You can file a lawsuit no matter how long ago the abuse happened if you have not turned 21. If you have turned 21 or older, then the new 2023 amendment allows you to file a potential claim until January 31, 2026.

Even if the law gives more time to sexual abuse victims, it is still emotionally exhausting for victims to come forward. That is why it is important to contact a lawyer. An experienced lawyer will help and guide you in filing your claim and recover the appropriate compensation and justice you deserve.
